McMaster Counting Slides - McMaster Worm Egg Counting Slides McMaster Counting Slides - McMaster Worm Egg Counting Slides

Faecal Worm Egg Counts McMaster worm egg counting slides are widely used for performing faecal worm egg counts (F.E.C’s). Faecal worm egg counts are performed on faeces samples mainly from large animals such as horses, sheep and cattle which normally harbour low levels of worms in their guts. Benefits of Faecal Worm Egg Counts To provide an estimate of the adult worm burden in an individual or small group of animals. To detect animals shedding relatively large numbers of worm eggs in their faeces and thereby posing a threat to other animals grazing the same pasture. When performed as part of a Faecal Egg Reduction Test (F.E.C.R.T) to detect the efficacy of, or resistance to, the anthelmintic in use. In general, faecal worm egg counts help vets and owners maintain their livestock in good health, provide financial benefits by avoiding unnecessary worming treatments and delay/avoid the development of anthelmintic resistance.   Vetlab McMaster 2 Cell Counting Slide The Vetlab McMaster worm egg counting slide is made entirely of acrylic and consists of a base slide upon which a smaller slide is fixed on top of three supports thereby forming two chambers. On the underneath of the top slide over each chamber, a grid is printed in blue ink measuring exactly 10mm x 10mm divided by 5 vertical lines (forming 6 columns). The top slide is positioned exactly 1.5mm above the base slide so the counting area of each chamber holds 0.15 ml. in volume. The Vetlab McMaster counting slides has some significant advantages compared to the conventional glass type. Made from the strongest optical acrylic available — which is more robust than glass. The upper section is fused to the lower section by sonic welding rather than glue. This makes the slide more durable and avoids faecal residue being trapped between the pieces. The 6 grid columns making counting faster as their width exactly match the width of field of view of...

TARGET Canine Ovulation Test Kit TARGET Canine Ovulation Test Kit

Canine Ovulation Test applicable to - Dog Sample: Serum or Plasma TARGET Canine Ovulation Test is a rapid semi-quantitative ELISA test on a membrane for the visual estimation of the Progesterone level in plasma or serum of the bitch. Its main use is to determine and monitor the period of ovulation to predict the correct time to mate. Canine Progesterone Ovulation is triggered by Luteinising Hormone (LH) which peaks two days before ovulation. Progesterone levels then begin to rise at the same time as the LH surge. After ovulation the ovocytes take 2-3 days to ripen making the most fertile period 5-6 days after the initial rise in Progesterone. Thus measuring Progesterone is the most accurate method of determining the correct time to mate. Sample Preparation A centrifuge is essential to prepare the sample from whole blood. Samples must not contain red cells or any significant amount of haemolysis (red colour) or lipaemia (white colour/fat). It is recommended that the bitch is not fed for at least 8 hours before bleeding to avoid these problems. Only clear Serum or Plasma must be used - do not use lipaemic or haemolysed samples .

Surgicutt Vet H and Surgicutt Vet K Surgicutt Vet H and Surgicutt Vet K

Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time Test applicable to: Dog or Cat Sample: Whole Blood Surgicutt Vet H (dog) and Surgicutt Vet K (cat)  is a useful in-clinic screening device for the identification of thrombocytic and vascular bleeding disorders in dogs and cats by measuring the Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time. Surgicutt Vet H enables the veterinarian to make a standardised incision (white lancet -1.0mm deep and 5.0mm long) in 1/1000 second, based on an easy-to-use and simple incision lancet technique. Surgicutt Vet K (yellow lancet - 1.0mm deep and 2.5mm long). This plastic device contains a sterile and fully automated retractable incision lancet. After planar placing on the mucosa the nearly painless incision is made automatically by simply pushing the trigger. Due to the automatic retraction of the steel blade after setting the incision, there is no possibility of injury to either the animal or the vet. The BMBT (Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time) is the time that passes once an incision has been made with the use of Surgicutt Vet H or K until haemostasis is present. Why test for Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time? It is important to test for Buccal Mucosal Bleeding Time as it will identify the state of haemostasis in the animal. Haemostasis is the complex physiological reaction the animals body has to all bleedings. Clinical signs may vary from animal to animal but can include the following: Surface bleeding Bleeding from the gums Recurrent nosebleeds Blood in urine Blood in faeces Excessive blood present when clipping toenails It can also be brought on due to excessive blood loss by surgery and minor physical trauma to the patient. Advantages of Surgicutt Vet H and Surgicutt Vet K Simple standardised test procedure Store at Room Temperature – tests are ready to use immediately Long shelf life Fast interpretation within a few minutes Standardised incision – easy to use For...

MykodermoAssay DTM and MykodermoAssay Trio MykodermoAssay DTM and MykodermoAssay Trio

MykodermoAssay DTM and MykodermoAssay TRIO Test applicable to - Dog, Cat, Farm and Small Animals Sample: Hair roots, Dandruff, Scabs and Skin Scrapings Mykodermo Assay DTM is a classical dermatophyte ringworm test media in an agar slant vial format. Mykodermo Assay Trio is an innovative petri dish format combining three of the most important dermatophyte culture media. Simple Test Procedures with Fast Results Both test formats ensure a fast confirmation of a clinically suspected diagnosis through colour change of DTM or DTM and ESA media, respectively. ESA is an optimised medium for the reliable visual and microscopic differentiation of dermatophytes and SAB/SDA, enables a faster growth compared to DTM and ESA. Dermatophytosis (ringworm) is one of the most frequent infectious dermatoses in small animals (cats, dogs, and rabbits), horses and farm animals but also in humans (zoonosis). It is caused by dermatophytes, filamentous fungi which use keratin (skin, hair and claws) as a carbon source. The clinically most relevant species are Microsporum (M.canis, M.gypseum, M.pesicolor), Trichophyton (T.verrucosum, T.menta grophytes) and Epidermophyton. In the case of a suspect ongoing dermatophytosis (spotted, patchy area of alopecia, often non pruritic), a specific diagnosis should be obtained by performing a culture using specific dermatophyte culture media. Why is it important to test for Dermatophytoses? Dermatophytosis is a highly infectious and contagious skin disease with zoonotic potential. It is therefore important to confirm the diagnosis quickly in order to give specific treatment and prevent it spreading to other animals and humans. What are the symptoms of Dermatophytoses? Lesions typically appear on head, ears, feet and forelimbs. These lesions can appear as patchy, crusted circular bald spots that may look red in the center. However, lesions can vary in appearance from a few broken hairs or patchy hair loss to lesions...

FASTest Rivalta FIP-VETube - Feline Infectious Peritonitis FASTest Rivalta FIP-VETube - Feline Infectious Peritonitis

Rivalta FIP-VETube Test applicable to: Cat Sample: Abdominal or pleural effusion material The RIVALTA FIP-VETube test is a simple, fast, on-site test which allows the veterinarian to detect or exclude an on-going FIP infection with a high degree of reliability, and is suitable for use in any veterinary practice. Aid to Differentiate cause of Effusion The test is an aid to differentiate between effusions caused by FIP (exudates) and those caused by other diseases (transudates). Test Principle Protein in the effusion is detected by adding a drop to the aqua-acetic acid mixture. This can be observed by the characteristic formation of more or less stable precipitation products or cloudy mists, forming drops or smears. In contrast, a transudate completely dissolves during sinking in the aqua-acetic acid mixture. The Rivalta test is not pathognomic for FIP but nevertheless has a very good sensitivity of 98% (high negative predictive value) and a specificity of 80%. Positive Rivalta tests can occur in cats with bacterial peritonitis or lymphoma although these conditions are usually easy to differentiate between using other tests. You may also be interested in FASTest FIP,  follow this link  MORE INFO There are many other different laboratory tests available to aid in the diagnosis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Tests which aid the diagnosis of Feline Infectious Peritonitis Direct detection of Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) in macrophages by PCR. Indirect detection of anti FCoV antibodies using rapid tests and/or indirect immunofluorescence tests (IFT). Screening of effusion (e.g. by the Rivalta test, biochemical and cytological tests). All these tests together with other biochemical and cytological tests have an important role to play in the final diagnosis of FIP. Why is it important to test for Feline Infectious Peritonitis? Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a potentially infectious disease...

FASTest Parvo Card - Canine Parvovirus FASTest Parvo Card - Canine Parvovirus

Parvo Card Test applicable to: Dog, Cat and Mink Sample: Faeces FASTest PARVO Card is a rapid immunochromatographic "lateral flow" test for the detection of antigen to Canine Parvovirus antigen in the faeces of dog, cat and mink. Parvovirus infection is a common cause of canine infectious enteritis. It is highly contagious. Therefore, a rapid and reliable diagnosis via in-house tests is important in a clinical setting. The precise diagnosis of a CPV infection enables the veterinarian to apply immediate treatment and to introduce quarantine measures for infected animals. Prevalence of Canine Parvovirus Although vaccination has greatly reduced the prevalence of Parvo CPV2 infection in the U.K., the recent economic recession has led to a reduction in vaccinations and an increase in CPV2 outbreaks. Maternal antibody is also causing a problem by neutralising vaccine in puppies and allowing a window of opportunity for infection in-between vaccinations. It is therefore vital for every veterinary practice to be on their guard and have the capability to quickly confirm CPV2 infections. FASTest Parvo Card allows veterinary practices to do this quickly and easily. Why is it important to test for Canine Parvovirus antigen? Canine Parvovirus (CPV2) is one of the most common and deadly causes of canine viral gastroenteritis in the world. Canine Parvovirus was identified in 1978 as a course of diarrhoea in dogs. It was discovered in North America and then rapidly spread throughout the world. Feline Parvovirus, the panleucopenia virus in cats and the enteritis virus in the mink have similar structures to Canine Parvovirus. What are the symptoms of Canine Parvovirus? Clinical signs are vomiting, dehydration and haemorrhagic gastroenteritis although these can vary in degree according to age, stress, vaccination status and other concurrent infections. Puppies are oronasally infected at an early age. The viruses are discharged via the faeces by the...

FASTest Giardia Strip FASTest Giardia Strip

GIARDIA Strip Test applicable to: Dog, Cat, Calf, Lamb, Hedgehog, Foal and Piglet Sample: Faeces FASTest GIARDIA Strip is based on the latest rapid immunochromatographic technique. It contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. One of these monoclonal antibodies is bonded to latex particles; the second is immobilized in the test zone of the strip. If the stool sample extract contains Giardia antigen, these will form an antigen-antibody complex with the latex particles. Giardia duodenalis (syn. G. lamblia or G. intestinalis) is a protozoan parasite commonly inhabiting the upper intestinal tract of dogs, cats and a wide range of other animals including humans. Unlike some other products, FASTest Giardia detects both the active disease (trophozoite) and the carrier state (cyst). Clinical Signs of Giardia in Young Animals Giardia tends to cause signs mainly in young animals e.g. dogs and cats aged between 6 weeks to 3 months. Asymptomatic carriers are possible. Giardia is a protozoan capable of infecting humans as well as other animal species e.g. Bovine, Feline and Canine. Giardia duodenalis exists in two different morphological stages: an asexual, intestinal growth form called a `trophozoite’ and an encystment form called an `oocyst’. Infection is achieved via oral ingestion of faeces or contaminated water. Why is it important to test for Giardia? Giardia is highly infectious and is transmitted by direct contact (only five to seven cysts are enough to cause the infection) Contaminated food Contaminated water Contaminated objects Grooming and vectors such as flies What are the symptoms of Giardia? Clinical signs of Giardia infection are typically acute or chronic diarrhoea, loss of appetite and/or growth retardation. Individuals most at risk are less than 1 year old, immuno-suppressed or malnourished. Prevalence rates can be as high as 10% in the normal population of dogs and cats and much higher in young...

FASTest FeLV-FIV Combination Test FASTest FeLV-FIV Combination Test

Feline Leukaemia Virus and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Test applicable to: Cat Sample: Whole Blood, Serum and Plasma FASTest FeLV-FIV is based on a rapid immunochromatographic technique. Extracellular FeLV-Antigens and/or FIV-Antibodies in the sample will form specific antigen-antibody complexes in the sample area. Lateral flow (migration) towards the FeLV and FIV Test areas (marked ‘T’ on the slide) allows these complexes to bind with gold particles labelled with monoclonal FeLV antibodies and synthetic FIV-Proteins to form a pink-purple Test line. A correct test procedure will be indicated by a second pink-purple line in the Control area (marked ‘C’ on the slide). Why is it important to test for FeLV and FIV? Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are associated with a wide range of clinical diseases including various infections, anaemia and tumours caused by their ability to damage the cat’s immune system. Persistent FeLV and/or FIV infections can be present in clinically healthy cats. These cats can potentially infect other cats and, in the case of persistent FeLV infection, may not live more than 3 years. Thus it is important that every cat that is brought into the surgery be tested for both FeLV and FIV, including those for FeLV vaccination (AAFP Guidelines 1). What are the symptoms of FeLV-FIV? Clinical signs are progressive deterioration of the cat’s health which can be interspersed with periods of relatively good health. In the early stages of the FeLV infection, it is not unusual for cats to show no signs of the disease at all. Some signs may appear after months or even years after the infection Some signs of FIV may not appear for years after the infection. FeLV Symptoms Poor coat condition Loss of appetite Enlarged lymph nodes Mucus membranes Pale gums Gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) Stomatitis (inflammation of the...

FASTest ROTA Strip FASTest ROTA Strip

Rotavirus Infection Test applicable to - Horse, Cattle, Pig, Dog and Cat Sample: Faeces The FASTest ROTA Strip contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. One of these monoclonal antibodies is bonded to Latex particles, the second is immobilised in the Test zone of the strip. Rotavirus Antigens If the stool sample extract contains Rotavirus antigens these will form an antigen-antibody complex with the Latex particles. As this complex migrates along the Test zone of the membrane to the immobilised capture antibody, a red line is formed indicating a positive test result. The remaining conjugate migrates to a second antibody on the Control zone of the test strip forming a blue line. This indicates the proper performance of the test. The colour intensity varies and is dependent on the number of antigens in the sample. Why is it important to test for Rotavirus? Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea (gastroenteritis) in young humans, domestic animals and birds. It is one of the primary causes of neonatal diarrhoea in calves (along with Coronavirus, Cryptosporidium spp, E.coli spp and Salmonella spp). Affected animals develop severe diarrhoea, leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and acidosis. FASTest ROTA Strip allows the veterinarian on clinical grounds to reach a specific diagnosis. The rapid identification saves time which can be used to suggest management strategies that will prevent further outbreaks of the disease optimising farm animal’s health and farm productivity. What are the symptoms of Rotavirus? Clinical signs are severe diarrhoea leading to dehydration. Advantages of FASTest ROTA Strip Store at Room Temperature - Tests instantly available for use Long Shelf Life - typically 18 months Simple test procedure Proven R.I.C. technology Results in 5 minutes Competitively priced For further information visit our website: www.vetlabsupplies.co.uk or telephone us on...

FASTest E.coli – K99 Strip FASTest E.coli – K99 Strip

FASTest E.coli –K99 Strip Test applicable to – Cattle and Sheep Sample: Faeces The FASTest E.coli-K99 Strip contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. One of these monoclonal antibodies is bonded to colloidal gold particles, the second is immobilised in the Test zone of the strip. If the stool sample extract contains K99 main pilar antigens these will form an antigen-antibody complex with the gold particles. As this complex migrates along the Test zone of the membrane to the immobilised capture antibody, a pink-purple line is formed indicating a positive test result. The remaining conjugate migrates to a second antibody on the Control zone of the strip forming a second pink-purple line. This indicates the correct performance of the test. Sample Storage Samples can be stored for up to 2 days at +2ºC to +8ºC. For longer storage period the faecal suspension can be stored for several months at -20ºC. Why is it important to test for E.coli K99? Diarrhoea is a common problem in calves, typically in the first 7 to 14 days of life and is often caused by more than one pathologic agent e.g. Rotavirus, Coronavirus, Cryptosporidium, Salmonella, Giardia and especially enterotoxigenic strains of E.coli (e.g. K99 (F5), (F41). Making a quick diagnosis on-site is difficult and usually based only on clinical signs. Therefore, as most diarrhoea causing agents do not show a clear pathogenic clinical picture especially in cases of mixed infection, it is useful to have a diagnostic tool to detect the causative agent. Rapid Identification Using FASTest E.coli-K99 Strip allows the veterinarian to make a rapid and specific diagnosis and to decide quickly on the most appropriate therapy. This rapid identification saves time and can be used to suggest future management strategies to prevent further outbreaks of disease optimising calves health and farm productivity. What are the symptoms of E.coli? Diarrhoea ...

FASTest CRYPTO Strip - Cryptosporidium FASTest CRYPTO Strip - Cryptosporidium

CRYPTO Strip Test applicable to -  Dog, Cat, Cattle, Hedgehogs, Guinea Pigs, Sheep, Goats, Pigs & Reptiles Sample: Faeces   Crypto Strip Test Principle The FASTest CRYPTO Strip contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. Positive faeces samples contain Cryptosporidiosis parvum surface antigens (SA) as well as all of its vegetative cycle forms. These antigens will react in the conjugate pad area with mobile monoclonal Anti-Cryptosporidiosis parvum-Antibodies (Anti Cryptosporidiosis parvum.-mAb) which are bound to red latex particles. Migrating along the nitrocellulose membrane these specific antigen-antibody-complexes are bound from fixed Anti-Cryptosporidiosis parvum-mAb at the Test zone producing a more or less red Test line. This Anti-Cryptosporidiosis parvum-mAb guarantees a high level of specificity for the aetiologic detection of Cryptosporidiosis parvum. The Correct Test Procedure The correct test procedure is provided by the occurrence of an intense blue Control line at the Control zone. The intensity/width of the test line depends on the concentration of Cryptosporidiosis parvum surface antigens in the test sample volume. Therefore, FASTest CRYPTO Strip does not depend on the presence of intact Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts or its other vegetative forms. Why is it important to test for Cryptosporidium? Cryptosporidiosis (Cryptosporidium parvum) is an important protozoan disease causing diarrhoea in many domestic animals and synanthropic species e.g. hedgehogs and reptiles, as well as humans (zoonosis). Cryptosporidium parvum most commonly causes problems in calves and, together with Rotovirus and Coronavirus, is responsible for neonatal diarrhoea which can lead to economic losses. Cryptosporidium parvum has also been reported in dogs (particularly young dogs less than 6 months old), cats, hedgehogs and exotics – especially those which are under stress or immuno-compromised.   What are the...

FASTest BCV Strip - Bovine Coronavirus FASTest BCV Strip - Bovine Coronavirus

BCV Strip Test Applicable to: Calf Sample: Faeces The FASTest BCV Strip is based on a rapid immunochromatographic test principle. The test membrane contains two unique monoclonal antibodies. One of these monoclonal antibodies is bound to colloidal gold particles, the second is immobilised in the test zone of the strip. If the stool sample extract contains bovine coronavirus antigens, these will form an antigen-antibody complex with the gold particles. As this complex migrates along the Test zone of the membrane to the immobilised capture antibody, a pink-purple line is formed indicating a positive test result. Coronavirus infections show fluid and mucous diarrhoea, mostly over a short period of time. Stress situations and secondary viral or bacterial infections concurrent to bovine coronavirus infections can prove fatal to the animal. Bovine Coronavirus is often associated with Rotavirus, Cryptosporidium and enterotoxigenic E.coli. Also see our FASTest D4T Bovine Strip which is a unique device allowing a faeces sample to be tested using 4 rapid immunochromatographic test strips for the detection of Bovine Coronavirus, Rotavirus, Cryptosporidium and E.coli-99 – all at the same time. Why is it important to test for Bovine Coronavirus? Bovine Coronavirus infection is one of the most frequent causes of gastroenteritis in calves and related species. Coronavirus infections in calves are one of the most common causes of neonatal diarrhoea. The virus breeds in the small intestine and is excreted with the animal’s faeces. After excretion, the bovine coronavirus remains for a long time in the environment. Early Diagnosis and Associations Early diagnosis is vital for successful treatment because the medication has to begin within 24 hours of the onset of diarrhoea. To detect enteropathogens in calves requires time, experience and specialists laboratory equipment. The practising veterinarian, however, requires rapid, reproducible,...
